75-year old wins Spanish Poker Tour

23 July 2008

VALENCIA, Spain -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Cayetano Garcia, at 75 years old, is the oldest person ever to win a major poker tournament in Europe.

On Sunday, July 20, Garcia made poker history by taking the crown at the final table of the Spanish Poker Tour in Valencia. The event was sponsored by the online European poker room, Everest Poker.

Cayetano brushed aside his more youthful rivals over a great weekend of poker, and in a gesture of typical understatement, the final trio made an agreement to share the second and third places (€19,500 each). Garcia ended up taking €26,500 back to his home in Alicante.

The Spanish Poker Tour saw 1,000 players from all over Europe try to reach the final in Valencia last weekend. Countries represented in the competition included Sweden, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands

The other two finalists, Lautaro Curi, 26, also from Spain, and Alain Char, 28, from France, were delighted to see the 75-year-old take the cup. Lautaro even knew Cayetano before the weekend as they are both from Alicante.

Cayetano will now be sent to the buy-in €2,500 event in the Canary Islands in December, courtesy of Everest Poker
