41 Arrested at Illegal Dogfight in New Jersey

TOMS RIVER, New Jersey –– As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer: " Tipped off by animal-rights activists, police raided a dogfight and arrested 41 people on illegal-gambling and other charges.

"People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals notified New Jersey's Division of Criminal Justice about the time and place of the fights, and the information was passed on to police in Dover Township, Ocean County.

" At 10 p.m. Saturday, about 20 police officers and five prosecutor's investigators burst into a Route 9 warehouse where the fights had begun, said Lt. William Herkert, chief of detectives. Inside, there were two badly mauled pit bulls, a 15-by-15-foot ring, and about 40 people watching the fights, Herkert said…"
