3000 Poker Machines Exempt From New Australian Rules

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the (Australia) Herald Sun: "Three thousand of Victoria's poker machines will be exempt from tough new rules designed to crack down on problem gambling.

"Registered gamblers will be allowed to set their own loss limits on 10 per cent of the state's 30,000 machines.

"Gaming Minister John Pandazopoulos yesterday said these gamblers would be required to use a PIN, card or similar technology to play.

"`They would have to nominate how much they were prepared to lose in a given period,' he said.

"He said the 3000 machines fell into the restricted access category because of the identification requirements.

"This is despite the machines offering players unrestricted betting limits.

"…There would be 3000 machines in the restricted access category and each of the state's three gaming operators would be allowed to apply for one third -- 1000 machines.

"…By 2008, all machines will have to comply with the regulations.

"…Mr Pandazopoulos has issued a ministerial direction bringing into force the restrictions, which he said were the toughest rules governing any gambling industry in the world…"
