3000 Aussie Pokie Players Say 'Ban Me'5 May 2002AUSTRALIA -- As reported by (Australian) News Herald: ``More than 3000 Victorian pokies addicts have joined the self-exclusion program since its introduction in 1997. ``The Australian Hotels Association and Clubs Victoria have spent about $1 million on the scheme -- the first of its type in the world. ``Poker machine players who sign the deed ban themselves for a period of two years from entering gaming venues nominated on their list. ``If found breaching the deed, gaming venue staff reserve the right to remove the gambler. ``The scheme has been endorsed by gamblers' help and family support groups. ``AHA boss Alan Giles said the program had been a great success in the fight against problem gambling. ``...Mr Giles said about 80 per cent of pokies addicts stayed away from gaming venues after signing the deed..." |
