250 G's to Study Gambling

10 July 1998

And still another gambling impact study! Never mind the $5 million or so federal traveling show called the National Gambling Impact Study Commission.

Now comes a $253,331 grant from the National Institute of Justice, a research arm of the Justice Department, to enable David Giacopassi, a professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Memphis, and researchers Grant Stitt of the University of Nevada, Reno and Mark Nichols of the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming, to visit seven secretly selected communities where legalized casino gambling is less than five years old and do a 13-month study of the impact of casino gambling on crime and other aspects of life in the Midsouth and Midwest. The trio will file a preliminary report to Justice by the end of this year.
