14 New Mexico Nuclear Plant Workers Win $131 Million Powerball Jackpot1 December 2000ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — As reported by the Associated Press: "The $131 million Powerball jackpot was claimed Thursday by 14 Sandia National Laboratories security guards who all pitched in $10 each for the tickets. If verified, the win would be New Mexico's first Powerball jackpot since the state joined Powerball in October 1996. "…Felix Silva, one of the 14 employees, said he and his co-workers placed their ticket money in a pot and bought the winning ticket at a southeast Albuquerque convenience store. "…The employees and some family members were meeting with their attorney at New Mexico Lottery headquarters in Albuquerque Thursday morning to discuss how they would like to be paid, said Nadine Guillen, lottery spokeswoman. " …The employees were so excited that they arrived at the lottery office before lottery employees showed up for work Thursday morning, she said. " Out of the 21 states and Washington, D.C., that participate in Powerball, the New Mexico win would leave South Dakota as the only state that hasn't won a jackpot…" |
