130 Hotels Escape Aussie Pokies Super Tax

AUSTRALIA – As reported by (Australian) Advertiser: ``Treasurer Kevin Foley has agreed to a compromise with the hotel industry which will free 130 hotels from the poker machine super tax introduced in the State Budget this month.

``Foley, under pressure from the industry, yesterday granted the tax break to poker machine venues which earn profits between $1.5 million and $3.5 million a year.

``The decision is based on increased poker machine revenue growth and will not affect the Budget bottom line, the Treasurer claimed.

``But he also introduced a new levy on the sale of poker-machine venues, which will raise about $5 million a year.

``…The hotel industry said the cuts did not go far enough but would provide `some relief for hotels in the middle bracket'…"
