£12 Million Casino Proposed for English Town

UNITED KINGDOM –- Jan. 25, 2002 –- As reported by the Surrey Adviser: "Guildford could become one of the biggest gaming towns in Britain after dramatic plans to build a £12 million (US$17 million) casino were revealed this week.

"The streamlined, glass-fronted entertainment complex, housing a casino, bar, nightclub and restaurant, could appear in the town – if plans to transform The Drink and Bar Mambo nightclubs are approved by Guildford Borough Council.

"Businessman Michel Harper, who owns the Onslow Street site, has announced plans to demolish the buildings and start from scratch in a bid to give Guildford `the wow factor'.

"…The site was granted outline planning consent for a casino in the mid 1990s and Michel Harper has already been a selected and named respondent by the gaming board for the last two Government White Paper proposals on gambling and betting laws.

"The new scheme would take 15 months to build if planning officials give their consent and Mr Harper said that it will go ahead without a casino if deregulation of gaming laws does not happen…"
