£1 Million Poker Game May Be Illegal

12 March 2002

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by Ananova: "A million pound (US$1,415,527)poker game has been postponed because it may break the law.

"Scotland Yard called for a halt to the Poker Million game in London less than three weeks before it was due to begin.

"…The fact the event is planned in a hotel rather than a casino potentially involves the police's licensing powers.

"Metropolitan Police lawyers and the organisers, Poker Million Ltd - a joint venture between Ladbrokes' internet division and Barry Hearn's Matchroom Sport - are now trying to see whether the game can take place at all.

"…A million-pound poker game has been played in the UK before but it was in the Isle of Man, where there are fewer restrictions."
