$95.3 Million Powerball Winner28 January 2002DES MOINES, Iowa –(Press Release) -- Jan. 27, 2002 -- A single ticket purchased in Arizona won Saturday night's $95.3 million Powerball jackpot. The ticket owner now has the option of selecting the annuity or the $52.1 million dollar cash option. In addition to the jackpot winner, 750,117 other players across the nation won a total of almost $5.8 million in prizes. The numbers drawn Saturday night were: 5, 14, 15, 22, 30 and the Powerball was 31. The Power Play multiplier was 4. Six players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. None of those players purchased the Power Play option for $1. If they had, they would have won $400,000. Ninety-eight players correctly matched four white balls plus the Powerball to win $5,000. Nine of those players had the Power Play option and multiplied the prize by four for a total prize of $20,000. More than 35,000 winning Powerball players spent the extra dollar on Power Play and multiplied their prize by 5. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier. Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels. Players purchased 27 million tickets between Thursday and Saturday night. Saturday night was the 16th draw since this jackpot run started on December 5, 2001. The jackpot for the Wednesday, January 30 drawing will be $10 million with a cash option of $5.5 million. The lotteries sold $1.3 billion in Powerball tickets in 2001. That translates into more than $400 million for worthwhile state projects. Powerball is played in 21 states and the District of Columbia. Pennsylvania will begin selling Powerball tickets in the summer of 2002. |
