$88 Million Lotto Winner Comes Forward

22 August 2000

SAN FRANCISCO , CALIFORNIA -- Aug. 22, 2000 – As reported by The San Francisco Examiner: "A longtime San Francisco resident has come forward to claim the $88 million Lotto jackpot, deciding to take a high profile in her family's future but a low profile with the public.

"Nita Colla found out she had the winning numbers shortly after they were announced Wednesday night, but didn't come forward until late Monday afternoon.

"…Colla and her equally shy husband, Thomas, will take care of their extended family but will not be granting interviews any time soon about her lucky ticket, which ended up being worth more than any other in California lottery history.

"…Less than an hour after the winning ticket became public, someone in their Filbert Street apartment called the cops on the reporters waiting outside.

"…[California Lottery spokeswoman Norma] Minas said Colla's winning numbers were among two $5 quick-pick tickets she bought. Her husband purchased a ticket as well.

"The Collas and several children and grandchildren came to the Lottery office late Monday afternoon. Minas said the money will allow more travel and educational opportunities for the family.

"…The $88 million prize is the largest one-winner jackpot in the 15-year history of the California Lottery.
