$88.7 Million Powerball Jackpot Won in South Carolina8 May 2003IOWA -- (Press Release) -- Powerball paid off big Wednesday night for one winning ticket sold in South Carolina. The ticket holder will now have to decide if they want the $88.7 million 29-year annuity or the cash option worth $48.7 million. The ticket holder will have 60 days after the ticket is validated to make that decision. This is the first time a Powerball jackpot has been won by a South Carolina player. The South Carolina Education Lottery started selling Powerball tickets last October. In addition to the jackpot winner, 505,203 other players across the nation won a total of more than $5.3 million in prizes in America's Game. The numbers drawn were: 13, 18, 34, 35, 51 and the Powerball was 28. The Power Play multiplier was 5. Seven players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Oregon, and Pennsylvania (2). The winning Indiana and Louisiana players, along with one of the winning Pennsylvania players purchased the Power Play option. By spending the extra dollar those players multiplied their prize by 5 for a total win of $500,000! Thirty players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Four of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $25,000! More than 52,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 5 Wednesday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier. Players purchased more than 21 million tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night. The jackpot for the Saturday, May 10 drawing will be $10 million with a $5.5 million cash option. The lotteries sold $1.6 billion in Powerball tickets in 2002. That translates into more than $480 million for worthwhile state projects. Powerball is now played in 23 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. |
