$42 Million Powerball Won24 February 2003IOWA – (Press Release) – Powerball paid off big Saturday night for two winning tickets; one sold in Louisiana and one sold in Missouri. The winners will split a $42 million jackpot. Each ticket holder will have to decide if they want the $21 million 29-year annuity or the cash option worth $11.3 million. The ticket holders will have 60 days after the ticket is validated to make that decision. In addition to the jackpot winners, 416,236 other players across the nation won a total of more than $7.7 million in prizes in America's Game. The numbers drawn were: 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, and the Powerball was 26. The Power Play multiplier was 2. Thirty-six players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut (3), DC (4), Indiana (3), Iowa (2), Louisiana (2), Minnesota (2), Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania (5), Rhode Island (2), South Carolina (5), South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Of those winners, seven players from the following lotteries purchased the Power Play option: DC, Indiana, Louisiana, Pennsylvania (2), and South Carolina (2). By spending the extra dollar those players multiplied their prize by 2 for a total win of $200,000. One hundred seven players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Sixteen of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $10,000. More than 57,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 2 Saturday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier. Players purchased more than 15.5 million tickets between Thursday and Saturday night. The jackpot for the Wednesday, February 26 drawing will $10 million with a $5.4 million cash option. The lotteries sold $1.6 billion in Powerball tickets in 2002. That translates into more than $480 million for worthwhile state projects. Powerball is now played in 23 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. |
