$266,000 Loss - That's Snow Business27 December 2000LONDON – Dec. 27, 2000 – As reported by the Daily Telegraph: ``Bookmakers were left facing a payout of more than £100,000 ($266,000) after several northern cities enjoyed a white Christmas on Monday. ``Snow fell in Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh and across the hills of north Wales and the north Midlands, confounding the earlier forecasts. ``After months of wet weather and talk of global warming, two lucky punters in Glasgow were left counting winnings of £1,600 and £700 each, cashing in on odds of 6-1 - some of the most generous on record. ``…This was the second year in succession that bookmakers had been caught out by the weather. Last year London technically enjoyed a white Christmas after a few flakes fell on the roof of the London Weather Centre, although there was no repeat this year. |
