$261.3 Million Powerball Jackpot Won by Two Tickets

10 July 2003

IOWA – (Press Release) -- America's Game paid off big for two winning tickets, one sold in Missouri and one in Pennsylvania. The winners will split a $261.3 million Powerball jackpot. Both winners will have to decide if they want 29-year annuity or the cash option worth $73.6 million each. The tickets holders will have 60 days after the tickets are validated to make that decision.

The $261.3 million dollar jackpot is the fourth largest Powerball jackpot in history and the largest lottery jackpot in the world this year.

In addition to the jackpot winners, 3,005,003 players across the nation won a total of $21,578,510 million in prizes in America's Game.

The numbers drawn were: 19, 21, 26, 31, 51 and the Powerball was 40. The Power Play multiplier was 3.

Forty players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Arizona (2), Colorado (2), Connecticut (7), Iowa (2), Indiana (5), Kentucky, Louisiana (2), Minnesota (2), Missouri (2), Nebraska, New Mexico (2), Pennsylvania (9), South Carolina (2), and Wisconsin. Three of the Match 5 winners purchased the Power Play option; two from Connecticut, and one each from Colorado and South Carolina. By spending the extra dollar those players multiplied their prize by 3 for a total win of $300,000.

Two hundred-eleven players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000.

Eight of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $15,000.

More than 174,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 3 Wednesday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

This 18-draw jackpot run started on Saturday, May 10. During this run, 12.7 million Powerball players won a total of approximately $89.5 million in cash prizes.

Players purchased more than 118 million tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night.

The jackpot for the Saturday, July 12 drawing will be $10 million with a cash option of $5.6 million.

The lotteries sold $1.6 billion in Powerball tickets in 2002. That translates into more than $480 million for worthwhile state projects.

Powerball is now played in 24 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
