$171 Million Powerball Ticket Sold in Pennsylvania

9 December 2004

PENNSYLVANIA – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Some lucky Powerball player from Pennsylvania has more than $171 million extra to help with shopping this holiday season. That's because that person has the one winning ticket worth $171.4 million. The $171.4 million jackpot not only ranks as the 10th largest Powerball jackpot ever hit, but also ranks as the 10th largest lottery jackpot ever won on a single ticket in the world.

The winner will now have to decide between the 29-year, 30-payment annuity and the cash option worth $93.4 million. The winner will have 60 days after their ticket is validated to make that decision. In addition to the jackpot winner, 1,120,303 other Powerball players across the nation won a total of more than $7 million in cash prizes.

This 15-draw jackpot run started with the Wednesday, October 20 drawing. During this run, over 8.1 million Powerball players across the nation won a total of more than $61.3 million in non-jackpot cash prizes. This run generated over $325.4 million in sales that will generate over $97 million to help fund all the good causes the lotteries support.

The numbers drawn were: 13, 17, 35, 45, 50 and the Powerball was 2. The Power Play multiplier was 2.

Eight players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Arizona, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and South Carolina. One additional match 5 player from Tennessee also purchased the Power Play option and won $200,000. A total of eighty-three players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Three additional winning players of this prize level also purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $10,000. More than 100,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 2 Wednesday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot, from 2-5 times. A wheel is spun at the beginning of each Powerball drawing to select that night's winning Power Play multiplier.

Players purchased more than 44.6 million tickets between Saturday and Wednesday night. The lotteries sold more than $2.2 billion in Powerball tickets in FY04. That translates into more than $660 million for worthwhile state projects. The jackpot for the Saturday, December 11 drawing will be $10 million.

Powerball is now played in 27 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. For more information on Powerball please visit our website at http://www.powerball.com .
