Golf Betting Column: What The Golfinggods Say….5 June 2006
Fantastic victories over the weekend for Carl Pettersen at The Memorial tournament on the US PGA tour, and Robert Karlsson at the Wales Open. Both European players took control of their tournaments early and never gave anyone an opportunity to contend. In a break from my usual format I would like to tell the readers about a client at Golfinggods and the miserable luck he experienced over the weekend. This client backed Carl Mason in the Irish Seniors Open and also Loren Roberts in the Allianze and coupled both players together in an each way double. Carl Mason was leading by four with nine holes to play at the Irish Seniors Open only to drop six strokes in three holes and miss the playoff by a stroke! Loren Roberts was leading the Allianze by three with four to play but double bogeyed the seventeenth hole to loose by one! The client went from winning £10,000 to winning nothing in less than thirty minutes. It just proves that Golf is a cruel game both on and off the course. This weeks US PGA tour heads to the beautiful Westchester CC for the Barclays Classic. The Westchester course is a US Open style layout with tight fairways and very narrow entry points to quick greens. The rough has been grown for the event this year and it will give players an opportunity to experience how conditions will be at Winged Foot next week. This is not a course where winners come from the pack on Sundays. Selections: David Toms: playing steady golf for most of this year and his game is based around fairways and greens. The Westchester course will suit his game and I see him contending this week. Aaron Oberholser: progressing into a top class golfer with a win already this year. His iron play is very solid and a good short game should see him contend at good each way odds. David Howell: keeping faith again this week with one of golf's most improved players. If he can recreate the form he showed at Wentworth then he must be a contender this week. Others to mention: Jim Furyk, Mike Weir & Fred Funk. The European tour moves to Austria for the BA-CA Open played around the Fontana GC. This tournament has been absent from the tour for ten years and thus the golf course will be new to most of the players. They can expect breath taking scenery as well as undulating fairways and smallish greens. As no course form is available it is best to select players on overall form only. Selections: Richard Green: the Aussie left-hander has been playing consistent golf for a number of seasons. His putting is his weakest element of his game however in a moderate field this week he can win again. Soren Hansen: a very good ball striker who needs the putter to behave to contend this week. If he can find his touch on the greens then he must be a solid each way option. Simon Dyson: a win already this year in Asia has been followed by a solid year in Europe. He is not afraid to win tournaments or shoot low scores so he must be a threat this week. Other to suggest: Gregory Havret, Gary Emerson & Colin Montgomerie. Until next week – May The Golfinggods Be With You!
