Washington Anti-Casino Supports City Council

LA CENTER, Washington – As reported by the (Longview, Washington) Daily News: "The La Center City Council opposes a casino at the Interstate 5 junction, and now they are getting some backing from neighbors to the north.

"Members of a newly-formed La Center group, 'Stand Up For North County,' attended the La Center City Council meeting Tuesday night. Councilwoman Kamie Biehl estimated that 80 to 100 people aired concerns about the tribe's proposed business site.

"…At the meeting, the council agreed unanimously to inform the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the agency that will determine if the Cowlitz Indian Tribe gets trust status for 150 acres of land at the La Center exit, of the adverse impacts an Indian business, particularly a casino, would have on the city, said Councilman Richard Curtis.

"Downtown La Center, two miles from the proposed I-5 site, already has four mini-casinos which net $30 million in gambling receipts and generate $3 million in gambling tax for the city…"
