Voters Will Decide Louisiana Casino Boat's Fate

ST. MARY PARISH, Louisiana – As reported by the Daily Advertiser: "Voters in St. Mary Parish will decide Saturday whether to allow the owners of a riverboat casino to permanently dock the vessel in the parish.

"The Belle of Orleans sustained significant damage during Hurricane Katrina when it broke loose from its moorings and slammed against a pier. Rather than return to its former location in Lake Pontchartrain, the boat's owner, Kentucky-based Columbia Sussex Corp., approached St. Mary Parish officials about bringing the riverboat to the Amelia area.

"…Should voters allow the company to locate the riverboat near Amelia, the owners hope to have the casino open by November.

"While the move could provide an economic boost to the parish, it also could mean serious competition for Cypress Bayou Casino in Charenton, which is operated by the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana…"
