Voter turnout may affect VLT results

SOUTH DAKOTA – As reported by the Argus Leader: "As South Dakota prepares to gauge its citizens' moral stance on a number of new ballot issues, some wonder whether a high turnout of so-called values voters also might affect the results of a more familiar debate.

"The question is whether some will bundle video lottery repeal into a values vote on measures such as a ban on abortion and the prohibition of same-sex marriage.

"Robert Regier, executive director of the South Dakota Family Policy Council, thinks they will.

"…But those supporting the retention of video lottery say South Dakota voters already have opted three times in the past to keep video gaming. The likely reason is a practical one - money.

"In the past fiscal year, video lottery contributed about $112 million to the state treasury…"
