Vernon Downs' fate to be decided

NEW YORK -- As reported by the Syracuse Post-Standard: "State regulators are scheduled to decide today if Vernon Downs can continue racing this season.

"Since March, the racing board has allowed Vernon Downs to race just one month at a time, citing the track's ongoing financial troubles and inability to field enough horses early in the season. The board on June 19 allowed Vernon to race until today, but noted that the track's financial condition was still weak despite the opening of a casino in October..."
