Gaming NewsUse of Manitoba Casino Cash Applauded23 November 2004WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- As reported by the Winnipeg Sun: "The NDP government's decision to pay for more cops with cash from casinos will make a significant difference in the battle against crime, says the head of the Winnipeg Police Association. "'Our resources are spread so thin,' Loren Schinkel said yesterday after the government promised to give 5% of casino revenues next year and 10% the following year to pay for more officers across Manitoba. 'We're certainly supportive of always getting more officers on the front lines.' "Winnipeg will receive about $2.5 million in 2005 and about $5 million in 2006. It must be used for police services, but that doesn't bother Mayor Sam Katz. "The province will provide further funding -- exact dollars weren't disclosed -- to bring on an additional 20 police officers for areas outside Winnipeg in the next two years. "Katz estimated the extra money will permit the city to hire 20 more Winnipeg officers and fill needs in other departments..." |
