Two Casinos Proposed Near Merced

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Fresno Bee: "Merced could become a gateway to gambling with two plans to bring American Indian casinos to cities just south and west of the city.

"The 1,350-member North Fork Mono tribe wants to build a casino on Highway 99 outside Madera. The foothills tribe has an agreement with Madera County and is working on federal and state approvals to operate a gaming facility off a reservation.

"The other proposal comes from a small, landless Stockton tribe that wants to build a major casino in western Merced County near Los Banos. The California Valley Miwok Tribe, which has a dozen members, recently dropped a proposal to build a casino in San Benito County because of opposition from local elected leaders.

"…Because the Miwok are without a reservation, they have a long way to go before they can build a casino in the county. First, they would have to prove they are indigenous to the area where they want to build, said Vince Sollitto, spokesman for Gov. Schwarzenegger…"
