Twenty-seven racehorses lost in brutal fire

CHARLES TOWN, West Virginia -- An early morning fire at the Charles Town Races this weekend resulted in the death of 27 horses, The Herald-Mail reported.

The local firechief described the fire as "the worst he had witnessed involving animals" in the Herald-Mail report.

The fire was "too intense" to save the horses and people described hearing the animals "banging at the walls and screaming", The Herald-Mail report said.
