Turning Stone lays off 50-100 workers31 October 2008
VERONA, New York -- As reported by The Oneida Daily Dispatch: "Oneida Nation officials said they wanted to clear up what they say are misconceptions and rumors.
"One conference call to journalists was to announce that the Turning Stone Casino and Resort has laid off between 50 and 100 employees.
"The other was to stress that the Oneida Indian Nation has negotiated, will negotiate, wants to negotiate.
"Those were the points being made in two press conference calls with the Nation on Thursday.
"Peter Carmen, senior vice president of Oneida Nation Enterprises, general manager of Turning Stone and chief legal officer of the Oneida Nation said he wanted to start by 'addressing and correcting rumors out there that there is some mass layoff here. We've heard hundreds and maybe a thousand; it's just not true, not happening.'
"...Calling the layoffs a 'staff adjustment,' Carmen said 'it affects less than 50 to 100 employees, less than 2 percent of our workforce of almost 5,000...'"
