Turning Stone hotel plan hits obstacle

5 May 2008

VERONA, New York -- As reported by the Syracuse Post-Standard: "A proposed hotel development near Turning Stone Resort and Casino might be dead because the state won't let developers tap into a waterline across the road. Local officials and developers say the state Department of Environmental Conservation has told them the town of Verona can't add more users to the water district that serves Turning Stone.

"'There's a waterline right across the road, 30 feet away from our site, and we can't tap into it,' said Greg Widrick of Sphere Development, which wants to build a hotel and restaurant complex on the south side of Patrick Road, across from the casino.

"The water comes from the city of Oneida, and the DEC has told the city it needs to find more water for the future. In the meantime, the state won't let Verona expand its water district to include the Sphere development.

"...Town Supervisor Owen Waller said the Sphere project is likely doomed.

"...The company has proposed building an 80- to 100-room hotel, two restaurants and town houses on 12 acres across from the Turning Stone complex..."
