Tribe Weighing Odds of Casino at Portland Racetrack

OREGON – As reported by the Oregonian: "The Grand Ronde tribes and the company that operates horse racing at Portland Meadows are considering building what would be Oregon's largest casino at the racetrack, a tribal official said Wednesday.

"Called a 'racino,' the combination has worked in other states to revive struggling racetracks. Magna Entertainment Corp., which has an ownership interest in Portland Meadows, has said it's losing money at the track.

"…Such an operation would face major regulatory hurdles, however.

"…This is not the first time the Grand Ronde has looked at building a casino in Portland. Previously, it offered to help finance a major league baseball stadium or a headquarters hotel near the Oregon Convention Center, in exchange for operating a casino in the city. Neither idea got off the ground.

"…The Grand Ronde's Spirit Mountain Casino is the largest of the state's nine tribal casinos. About 65 miles southwest of Portland, it has 1,500 slot machines, an 850-seat bingo hall, and tables for blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat, keno and poker…"
