Tribe Bets on Smaller Casino

LA POSTA INDIAN RESERVATION, California – As reported by the San Diego Union Tribune: "…The La Posta Indian band is hoping that scenic view – and an indoor-outdoor International House of Pancakes restaurant – will entice gamblers to drive a mile uphill from the Campo tribe's much larger Golden Acorn Casino.

"When it opens in mid-November to early December, the 20,000-square-foot La Posta Casino will have 349 slot machines, less than half as many as the Acorn.

"…Tribal business manager James Hill said La Posta expects its little casino to draw more than enough business to repay its partner, Arizona's Yavapai Apache tribe, for the $20 million construction. It also likely will reap profits to provide health care, education and reservation infrastructure improvements for its 27 members.

"Keeping it small keeps the overhead down, Hill said, adding that the casino's modest size could be an attraction for some gamblers.

"…Hill said La Posta expects its casino and the Golden Acorn to generate business for each other.

"Golden Acorn General Manager Don Trimble agreed, saying both backcountry casinos could draw customers by offering them 'a choice and a variety.'…"
