Tough times for Caesars Windsor

ONTARIO -- As reported by the Windsor Star: "American gamblers, who are expected to make up 80 per cent of the visitors to Caesars Windsor, have started cutting back this year after spending more in 2007 than the year before.

"The gambling industry ended 2007 in good shape in the United States, according to the American Gaming Association. But 2008 has seen revenues decline.

"Gross U.S. gaming revenues in the nation's 467 commercial casinos totalled $34.13 billion in 2007, up 5.3 per cent over 2006. An estimated 54 million Americans visited a casino in 2007, helping to employ 360,618 people who earned $13.8 billion in wages and tips.

"...But revenues and growth are starting to slip due to worsening economic conditions in the U.S.

"...But there could be a silver lining for Caesars Windsor in these developments: fewer visits to Las Vegas could mean more players spend their gambling budget closer to home in regional markets such as Windsor-Detroit..."
