Gaming NewsTexas Leaders Oppose Expanded Gambling31 March 2005AUSTIN - Three Democratic leaders in the Texas House announced their opposition Wednesday to proposals that would expand gambling and asked the Republican leadership to remove that option from consideration as a state revenue-raiser. "'We want to take gambling off the table this session,' said Rep. Jim Dunnam, D-Waco, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. He was joined by Reps. Pete Gallego, D-Alpine, and Garnet Coleman, D-Houston. "Gallego, chairman of the House's Mexican American Caucus, said he thinks most of the House's 63 Democrats and enough members of the Republican majority will join to kill any gambling proposal. "…Supporters of the proposals are promoting them as a way to raise large sums of new revenue, particularly for public education…" |
