Slots may be too late to save Massachusetts track

RAYNAM, Massachusetts -- As reported by The Enterprise: "State lawmakers say there appear to be enough votes in the Legislature to approve slot machines for Massachusetts racetracks this fall.

"But can the process move fast enough to save Raynham Park?

"State Rep. David Flynn, D-Bridgewater, isn't sure. Flynn, who has pushed for years to bring slots to the track, is worried that even if the stars align for the idea this time, it might be too late.

"The track is slated to close on Jan. 1, potentially leading to 600 job cuts, due to a ballot initiative last year making betting on greyhound racing illegal in Massachusetts. "Once they close, I'm afraid it could be permanent," Flynn said — even if slots win approval.

"That's because it could take as much as a year for the state to get its new regulations and commissions in place before giving the go-ahead for slots, Flynn said..."
