Sky Poker Tour players brave big freeze

12 January 2010

LONDON, England -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Despite the nationwide freeze, the Sky Poker Tour second leg in Newcastle received a great turnout with David 'Daveyzz' Marley winning the first prize of £4000 and a seat into the Sky Poker Tour Grand Final at the Dusk Till Dawn cardroom in Nottingham in September. David, who beat 149 other entrants for the first prize trophy, qualified for the Newcastle leg of the tour on www.skypoker.com for just £5.20.

The event held at Newcastle's Aspers Casino on Saturday 9th January was played in the fun and friendly atmosphere players have come to expect at the Sky Poker Tour. After several hours of play and with five players remaining David went all-in with Pocket Nines against John Pick from Chester-le-Street, who had Pocket Jacks. A miraculous Queen-Nine-Nine flop gave David Quads, which doubled his stack. On the flop of the final hand, David had second pair and an up-and-down straight draw against Sunderland's Dave 'Raffles' Evans' top pair, and went on to river a straight to win the tournament.

David, a Bridlington local and five time winner of The Open, Sky Poker's flagship 9.00pm tournament, was delighted but modest about his big win in Newcastle. David insisted that he did not think he was on to a good thing until later in the game.

"I played a standard game really – steady. I stole a few blinds, and when I had to I played my big hands big. The final table was tough. I had come in on 9th out of 10 and 5th out of 5, and just got myself up there."

The full result was as follows

1st David Marley £4,000
2nd David Evans £2,600
3rd Richard Robinson £1,800
4th John Pickering £1,350
5th Gary Graham £1,050
6th Carl Teasdale £900
7th Helen Rideout £750
8th Mick Jennings £600
9th Andrew Burden £450

Also cashing, winning £250: Kevilfish, Quietman, Bennett78, Woody2008, R0cker, Brass.

It has been a great tour so far for the Davids. The final two at Newcastle follow on from David "David36" Bryan, who won the first leg in Manchester. Sky Bet is offering odds of 14-1 that another David wins the next leg in Luton.

The next leg of the Sky Poker Tour will be held in Luton on 6th March 2010. Qualification for the tournament is through satellites on www.skypoker.com, which are available now.
