Schwarzenegger Takes Anti-Gambling Campaign to Silicon Valley

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the San Jose Business Journal: "California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called on a gathering of 175 business and political leaders in San Jose this afternoon to join him in opposing two statewide ballot initiatives that would increase the opportunity gambling at race tracks and card rooms.

"The governor said groups pushing the ballot initiatives 'want to pave the way for Las Vegas-style casinos all over California.' He called Proposition 70 'a sweetheart deal' that 'gives the tribes a 99-year monopoly and unlimited number of slot machines.'

"'Proposition 70 would require tribes to pay their fair share,' says William Rukeyser, a spokesman for the Yes on 70 campaign who spoke to reporters outside Parkside Hall after the event. The proposition would require all tribes to pay 9 percent of their gross and would bring in more money to state coffers than Schwarzenegger's plan…"
