School board member pleads guilty to possessing gambling machines

PITT COUNTY, North Carolina -- As reported by The Daily Reflector: " A Pitt County Board of Education member pleaded guilty Wednesday afternoon to two counts of possessing gambling machines at his businesses.

"Billy Ray Peaden entered his plea in Pitt County Superior Court and was sentenced to probation and fined $6,000 for having six illegal machines in operation at convenience stores he operates.

"Peaden, who operates convenience stores in the Greenville, Belvoir and Farmville areas, said little during the hearing.

"...A felony conviction would have required Peaden under state law to give up his seat on the Pitt County Board of Education, a six-year term he won in 2004. He also serves on the board of directors of University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina and is a former member of the Pitt County CrimeStoppers Board of Directors..."
