Scaled-down Delaware NFL betting begins

DOVER, Delaware -- As reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer: "That sultry brunet in the skimpy referee's outfit who fetchingly beckons Dover Downs' Web site visitors to try sports betting probably should be replaced.

"After all, the glamorous wagering system she symbolizes, one that likely would have trimmed the state's $800 million budget deficit and seduced sports-mad gamblers throughout the Northeast, is now just a plain-Jane three-team parlay scheme.

"Whatever the hopes, the betting begins today as the NFL season begins tonight with the first game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans. Because of the three-team parlay system, bettors can't win until at least Sunday, when most of the other NFL games are played.

"Bets can only be made on NFL games - no baseball, basketball, hockey, or college sports, as casinos had hoped..."
