Saskatchewan to collect casino liquor tax

REGINA, Saskatchewan -- As reported by the Star Phoenix: "An agreement that sees the equivalent of the provincial liquor tax collected at the Dakota Dunes Casino and then remitted to the Whitecap Dakota First Nation could be a harbinger of things to come in more of Saskatchewan's First Nations casinos.

"The pilot program, agreed to in August 2007 as the casino opened, sees the province relinquish the liquor consumption tax in the casino, which is on the Whitecap reserve land.

"In its place, the province collects an equivalent levy on alcohol sold in the casino, with that money then going to the band.

"...For Whitecap, it amounts to an estimated $150,000 in revenue annually, according to the finance ministry..."
