Saskatchewan casino profits divided

4 July 2008

REGINA, Saskatchewan -- As reported by the Star Phoenix: "Profits from provincial casinos are being divided for First Nations for the first time under a more generous gaming agreement approved last year.

"An order-in-council approved by the Saskatchewan Party cabinet last week puts $37.2 million into the First Nations Trust, which is used by individual First Nations for economic development, recreation and services.

"Under an agreement negotiated by the previous NDP government last year, the First Nations Trust receives 50 per cent of the profits from the five Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) casinos, up from 37.5 per cent in the previous agreement.

"The trust also continues to get 25 per cent of the two government-owned casinos in Regina and Moose Jaw.

"First Nations and Metis Relations Minister June Draude said Thursday she's satisfied with the current gaming agreement.

"...The agreement sees 25 per cent of SIGA's profits go into the provincial government's general revenue fund. The remaining 25 per cent goes to the five community development corporations associated with the First Nations casinos..."
