Sands Closing Leaves Nursing Home Adrift

2 October 2006

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the Press of the Atlantic City: "When the Sands Casino Hotel closes its doors for the final time, its 2,100 employees won't be the only ones who feel the pain.

"The shutdown also will leave a huge void in the lives of the 166 residents of the Eastern Pines Convalescent Center on Vermont Avenue, staff members said Friday.

"About 10 years ago, the Sands adopted the nursing home as its community-service project, administrator Jennifer Hess said. The casino donated a big cake every month to honor residents who were celebrating birthdays and hosted a party every Christmas.

"....The departure of the Sands leaves Eastern Pines without a benefactor and lacking some of the amenities the residents have come to count on..."

"...Pinnacle Entertainment contracted to buy the Sands in a deal announced earlier this month..."
