Revamped Casino Plans Fail to Win Over Residents

EDMONTON, Canada – As reported by Edmonton Journal: ``The crossed arms, wild gestures and angry interruptions told the story: downtown residents don't like developers' new plans for a revamped Baccarat Casino.

``Most of the three dozen community members who attended a Tuesday open house showing of the modified plans didn't like the last batch, either, and they said rotating the planned building 90 degrees -- to allay concerns about view from a neighbouring building -- did nothing for the majority of their complaints.

``…some residents' worries about the casino, such as a loss of green space or unwanted development in the current Baccarat casino site, are for city council and not the casino to deal with, said Howard Worrell, Alberta vice-president of Vancouver-based Gateway Casinos.

``He said the casino has listened to the complaints that it has the power to deal with.

``…His company wants to replace the current Baccarat Casino on the corner of 101st Street and 104th Avenue with a much larger facility on land it owns three blocks west..."
