Reno union calls for action

RENO, Nevada -- As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "Members of Culinary Workers Union Local 226 gave the green light Thursday night for negotiators to call for action, including a strike, if a contract settlement is not reached with the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.

"The voting was extended into the evening for late-comers among the union's 1,000 members, about half the staff at the hotel-casino, but by 7 p.m., an estimated 97 percent of the vote was in favor of a work action, union spokeswoman Pilar Weiss said.

"...The vote could mean a strike, boycotts, picket lines or rallies. Nothing is planned for the Labor Day weekend, said Kevin Kline, chief negotiator for the local.

"...At issue are paid vacation and holidays, which the company wants to trim, but the biggest is higher increased health contributions, Kline and others said. The changes have taken effect for nonunion workers, employees said..."
