Reno Casino's Days Numbered

RENO, Nevada – As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "The Golden Phoenix Hotel Casino and Resort will close Dec. 6 as developers get ready to convert the property into condominiums, for which 61 reservations have been made, officials said Thursday.

"The property is having a job fair Wednesday for the 400 employees forced out of work by the closure. About 50 employees will remain at the Virginia Street casino, which connects to the main building on Sierra Street by a sky bridge.

"'Right now, going into the slow season, we will maintain the slots, but eventually, depending how well we do in the spring, perhaps we will bring some table games in there,' said Ally Visram, chief operating officer for Golden Phoenix owner Vista Hospitality Co. based in New York City and Toronto.

"The casino opened in November 2002 after the hotel's April rebirth in the former Flamingo Reno building, which closed in October 2001. Vista has partnered with L-3 Development LLC of Chicago for the condominiums, called the Montage, one of at least eight condominium projects under way in downtown Reno…"
