R.I. economy hangs on Mass. gambling decision, study shows

29 March 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island should feel some anxiety about expanded gambling in Massachusetts if a recent study is anything to go by, The Providence Journal reported.

The study undertaken by the University of Massachusetts which was based on a car license plate survey concluded close to 50 percent of customers at two R.I casinos were from Massachusetts, the report said.

The report's author Prof Clyde Barrow remarked that Rhode Island's state finances are particularly vulnerable to any decision to expand gambling in Massachusetts, The Providence Journal reported.
