Public vote on Baton Rouge casino proposal

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- As reported by the Advocate: "The Metro Council decided Wednesday to let parish voters determine Feb. 9 whether Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. can build a casino in south Baton Rouge.

"The council's 10-0 final vote to put the referendum on the presidential primary ballot came after nearly two hours of debate and comment that included dueling public opinion polls and economic studies.

"Several council members said though they may ultimately oppose the project, voters must decide whether Baton Rouge should have a third riverboat casino.

"...Councilman Pat Culbertson, the most outspoken critic of the project, failed to persuade his fellow council members to call the referendum for the November 2008 presidential election. His motion to delay the election until next fall failed 3-5, with four members either not voting or abstaining.

"...The Louisiana Constitution mandates that parish voters must approve any expansion of gambling, such as a new riverboat..."
