Proposed Arizona casino could create 3,000 jobs

GLENDALE, Arizona -- As reported by The Arizona Republic: "Landing a 600-room resort and casino in Glendale's sports and entertainment district would boost a city striving to increase the number of jobs, although many would be service-oriented.

"The Tohono O'odham Nation recently unveiled plans for the state's largest casino. It would create more than 3,000 jobs. About 1,400 jobs would be direct hires once the development is fully operational. A tribal-commissioned study projects that the remainder would grow around the venture, such as food vendors supplying the complex's five planned restaurants.

"In addition, thousands of construction jobs would be created.

"Details on casino jobs weren't available at this early stage.

"The first hurdle is to get the federal government to classify the 134 acres at 91st and Northern avenues as land in trust, a necessary step to building a casino on what currently is not reservation land..."
