Pittsburgh casino makes payment for Penguins arena

12 October 2009

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- As reported by the Pittsburgh Business Times: "The Rivers Casino made its first payment to the Pittsburgh Sports & Exhibition Authority Thursday as part of an original agreement to help finance the new Consol Energy Center, the building now under construction to become the new home of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"The company wired $2.3 million to the Sports & Exhibition Authority, a portion of the total of $7.5 million the casino company expects to pay each year for the next 30 years, said Greg Carlin, CEO of The Rivers Casino.

"...Carlin added the casino continues to negotiate with the SEA over various details of the arrangement and expects to reach a full agreement in the near future.

"...The Rivers Casino opened on the North Shore in August after a delay caused by financial shortfalls by then-owner Don Barden, who later sold a majority of the casino project to the current ownership.

"The new $325-million-plus area is scheduled to be open for the start of the Penguins' 2010-2011 season..."
