NY casino opponents file lawsuits

MONTICELLO, New York – As reported by the New York Times Herald Record: "Casino opponents are suing in federal court to stop a proposed casino at the Monticello Raceway.

"A coalition of environmental and community groups plan to file papers this morning in the U.S. District Court in White Plains, challenging the proposed $600 million St. Regis Mohawk casino at the track, a spokeswoman for the Natural Resources Defense Council said.

"The NRDC, Sullivan County Farm Bureau, the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development and Orange Environment Inc. say the Bureau of Indian Affairs dodged its legal responsibility by failing to take a hard look at the environmental impact of the casino.

"The group also say that the information Empire Resorts provided in the environmental assessment submitted to the BIA is outdated and incomplete, based on data of 10 and 14 years ago…"
