NTRA Reveals Plans

LOUISIANA – As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "Like many in the racing industry, National Thoroughbred Racing Association Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer Tim Smith views purses as a solid barometer for just how strong the sport is economically.

"During a question-and-answer session at the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association's winter convention in New Orleans on Tuesday, Smith announced the NTRA's latest plans to help with a series of purse increases in the Breeders' Cup national stakes program and with respective state championship racing days.

"…Though official numbers have not been finalized, Smith is hopeful the national stakes program—which is comprised of more than 100 races across the country—will have in the range of $1-million devoted toward increasing its purses this year.

"In addition to that boost, the NTRA plans to add extra purse money to state-bred championship racing days for states that are NTRA members. The source of that funding will come from sponsorship dollars…"
