Gaming NewsNewport Grand Owners Consider Options20 December 2005NEWPORT, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "Now that they have state approval to embark on a $20-million expansion of their video-slot emporium, the owners of Newport Grand say they are weighing several options for raising the money -- including sale of the former jai alai fronton. "As the sale rumors began to swirl around the State House, Newport Grand co-owner and CEO Diane Hurley issued a brief statement yesterday. "She confirmed that sale of the multimillion-dollar gambling arena was one of three suggestions made by a financial adviser. "…'They suggested that that we should be open to any possibilities on a go-forward basis,' she said, 'including the $20-million investment . . . a joint venture or a potential sale.' "…Newport Grand, owned and operated by the Silvester family since Hurley's father first opened it as a jai alai fronton on June 10, 1976, is now one of only two Lottery-sponsored slot-machine halls in Rhode Island…" |
