Newcastle Casino talks with singer Layken Urie

15 December 2017

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Layken Urie is a singer-songwriter catching serious attention in the country music world with her soulful sound. The Oklahoma City-native has been performing since a young age and will be bringing her musical talents to Newcastle Casino this weekend.

Urie's band includes some powerful sounds played by the five-person group consisting of Layken Urie, lead vocals; Samuel Grounds, guitar; Brock Wilson, guitar; Joshua Clevenger, bass; and Trevor Lindley, drums.

Layken shared her journey to becoming a singer-songwriter and a few details about her upcoming record.

Q: What made you decide to become a country music singer/songwriter?
Layken: I've never known life without music. I grew up listening to artists like Patsy Cline and the Judds. My mom and grandma put me in pageants when I was about three years old so I had a stage to sing on and it stuck. I sang anywhere I could, from Oprys to fairs to bars; I would carry around my affidavit in my pocket! It wasn't until a Miranda Lambert Concert in 2013 that I really found my place in country music. There was something about her sound that I really relate to. The ability to sing and write music that is so versatile and vulnerable is inspiring.

Q: What has been your most memorable moment as a singer to date?
Layken: Back in August, my band and I did a Battle of the Bands for Southwest Country Fest in Kansas, and we ended up winning. It was very surreal for me. I've never really been the competitive type, so it was scary for me as an artist. We had so many people drive to Kansas to watch and support us, and it really meant a lot. It was an awesome experience. Not only did we get to travel and play out of state for the first time together, but we also got to meet so many amazing musicians!

Q: What do you look forward to the most when playing?
Layken: Seeing all of the people who support us is what I look forward to the most. They are there every single weekend we play, and dance and sing along, and are really just there for us. It makes me feel so incredibly blessed to know that they believe in my dream. I am so thankful for each and every one of them, as well as the people we meet along the way.

Q: What is your favorite song you've written? What's the story behind that song?
Layken: My favorite song I've written so far is a song called "Country to Me," which we'll be recording very soon. In a way, it tells the story of how I grew up and why country music is important to me. I'm excited to get it out there! You can hear it in the meantime at any of our upcoming shows, including this weekend at Newcastle Casino.

Layken Urie will be performing her newest songs as well as past favorites on the indoor entertainment stage at Newcastle Casino this Saturday night, beginning at 7 p.m. Learn more about Layken and her music by visiting her website.
