Newcastle Casino hosts OBI blood drive

20 March 2018

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Newcastle Casino and the Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) are looking for people who are strong, bold, and fearless to help save the lives of their fellow Oklahomans at their upcoming blood drive on Saturday, 24 March from noon to 5 p.m.

Each blood donor will receive their choice of t-shirt in "Strong" olive, "Bold" maroon or "Fearless" teal as well as $10 Free Play to use in the casino.

Newcastle Casino General Manager Ryan Sykes said he is looking forward to hosting OBI at the facility once again.

"We are pleased we've been able to continue our partnership with OBI and continue to be able to offer our facility as a donation site," Sykes said. "According to OBI, only 10% of those eligible to donate actually do. With that in mind, I encourage our local community to join us in helping this incredibly worthy cause."

Blood donation takes just about an hour, and each donation can save the lives of up to three patients. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days. Platelet donations can be made as often as every seven days, up to 24 times a year.

"Accidents happen. People are battling cancer. Babies are born prematurely," said John Armitage, M.D., president and CEO of Oklahoma Blood Institute. "The need for blood is constant, and there is no substitute. Unfortunately, until we know that someone is fighting for life, we just don't think about how critical it is."

Donors also receive free health screenings and Donor Rewards points, redeemable at Oklahoma Blood Institute's online store. If donors opt not to take the t-shirt, Oklahoma Blood Institute will make a monetary donation to Global Blood Fund for blood center assistance in developing countries.

OBI will have bloodmobiles set up in the casino's southeast parking lot. Donors must be at least 18 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and present a valid photo ID at the time of donation.

Appointments are not required but can be made by calling at 877-340-8777 or by visiting the website.
